Things to consider before towing or purchasing a trailer hitch:

1. Refer to owner's manuals for your tow vehicle, trailer and other parts of your towing system.  Learn the capabilities and limitations of each part.  GROSS TRAILER WEIGHT (GTW) and TONGUE WEIGHT (TW) are two of the most important items to consider.    THESE WEIGHTS MUST NEVER EXCEED THE LOWEST RATING OF ANY PART OF YOUR TOWING SYSTEM.  GTW is the weight of the trailer plus all cargo. TW is the vertical load at the tongue of the trailer. 
2. Trailer hitches come in a variety of shapes and sizes for various applications.  Generally speaking, trailer hitches are classified either weight-carrying or weight-distributing.  The type best for you depends entirely upon the tow vehicle and trailer size and weight.
